Another calm week, which was nice to get a few things out of the way.
More validation this week that accessibility is just not on people’s radars. From posting on Reddit and Twitter, there’s super little response, or people mix it up with usability. From experience, there seem to be several types of tasks (across design/tech) that are important to get right, but no-one wants to deal with them. A good approach seems to be to just consistently do them on the side like a good habit, and otherwise not make a big deal. But I do hope we can create a bit more awareness and momentum with the new, still work-in-progress, accessibility page (preview, PR). We’ll probably get a bunch of things wrong on that first iteration, but doing things poorly is the first step to doing things well.

A quick and dirty accessibility test of a bitcoin app
I have this issue open around creating a “Log in with bitcoin” reference design. The need for this became apparent during the last Shock the Web hackathon, where every team had to come up with a solution for this on their own. I found it difficult to think through this theoretically, so I started building a simple web app to get my hands dirty and feel out how this actually works. I thought it might be fairly straightforward, but I also wanted to implement some simple lighting micropayments, and man does this get complex quickly (partially just because I want super smooth interactions). Taking more time than expected, but I am hoping to work through this for the next hackathon in June, and then have a reference design ready and maybe do a workshop on this to help teams cover this aspect smoothly.
Otherwise, lots of PR reviews and conversations, as usual.
Have a good weekend.
